The latest output from the British Royal Family apparently confirming the ‘private’ status of the Duke (Harry) and Duchess (Meghan) of Sussex revealed how rudderless the British monarchy has become. King Charles and Prince Williams confirmed that the monarchy simply did whatever its media masters decreed.
Elizabeth II’s reign was about bringing comfort to the British people following the devastation of World War II and the loss of the empire as colonies gained independence. Charles has never ‘articulated’ the purpose of his reign, and its relevance to the 21st century, because of intellectual laziness accepting presumably that the role was purely ‘ceremonial’ rather than constitutional.
The Commonwealth provides Charles with a unique opportunity to do something worthwhile with his reign. Charles is the symbolic head of the Commonwealth with 56 countries and 2.7 billion people (a third of the world’s population) spanning 6 continents. Charles could do 3 things. One, Charles could publicly announce that the Monarchy henceforth would focus on the Commonwealth with the particular intention of taking millions out of property. Two, Charles could establish a royal commission to look into the matter of reparation for the Transatlantic Slavery focussing perhaps on a Marshall-type plan to industrialise Africa and the Caribbean. Three, Charles could cofound specific Commonwealth institutions, such as, a Commonwealth Industrial Bank, a Commonwealth Natural Resources Extraction Fund, and a Commonwealth Africa Maritime Economy Fund. The future prosperity of Britain depends on its involvement in the development of the Commonwealth.
